If high electricity bills have been bothering you, there’s a government scheme worth looking into. The central government launched PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to help households cut power costs through rooftop solar, and it’s picked up real momentum since launch.
What the Scheme Actually Does
The idea is fairly straightforward. The government helps cover part of your solar installation cost so you generate your own electricity instead of relying entirely on the grid. Since it began in February 2024, the scheme has already crossed 26 lakh installations across the country, with close to ₹17,967 crore paid out as central assistance so far. The bigger goal behind it is getting rooftop solar onto one crore homes.
How Much Subsidy You Actually Get
A 1 kW system brings ₹30,000, a 2 kW system gets ₹60,000, and anything from 3 kW upward caps at ₹78,000, which is the highest central subsidy on offer. If you happen to live in a special category state or union territory, that number can climb up to ₹1,17,000. A few states also chip in extra on top of the central amount, so it’s worth checking what applies in your specific state before you apply.

You need to be an Indian resident who owns the property where the panels will go. The system has to be grid-connected with net metering, and only ALMM-listed, approved modules qualify. People applying for the first time, who haven’t already used a similar government solar scheme, tend to get priority.
How to Apply
Applying itself isn’t complicated. You register on the official portal with your state, electricity distribution company, consumer number, mobile number, and email. From there, you log in and fill out the rooftop solar form. Once your DISCOM gives feasibility approval, you pick any registered vendor to handle the installation. After that’s done, you submit your plant details and apply for a net meter. DISCOM inspects the setup, installs the meter, and issues a commissioning certificate through the portal. Last step: you add your bank details along with a cancelled cheque, and the rooftop solar panel subsidy lands in your account, usually within 30 to 45 working days.

Keep your Aadhaar card, a recent electricity bill or bank passbook, a passport-sized photo, and proof of property ownership handy, since you’ll need these during registration.
How Much Power Can You Actually Generate
A 3 kW system usually generates about 12 to 18 units per day, which covers roughly 40 to 60 percent of an average household’s use, with larger systems handling even more.
